Custom Wood-Fired Beach Totem
This listing is for a custom ceramic totem, similar in scale and spirit to the one pictured here. Standing approximately 7 feet tall, these totems are built by hand, section by section, and then transformed in the firebox of a wood kiln—shaped not only by the artist’s hands, but by the elements themselves.
Helen Hierta’s Beach Totems are fired using traditional wood-fire techniques, where flame, ash, and atmosphere conspire to leave behind their mark. No glaze is applied—the surface finish forms naturally as the minerals in the wood ash melt and settle onto the clay, creating unexpected patterns, subtle textures, and one-of-a-kind earth-born palettes.
The result is a sculpture that carries the memory of fire, time, and collaboration. Wood-firings are community-centered experiences, often involving long shifts tending the kiln over days. Each piece emerges as a record of that process: shaped by people, place, and the poetry of combustion.
While your commissioned totem will reflect the general size and silhouette of the one shown (roughly 7’ tall), it will be entirely unique—formed in partnership with the fire and imbued with its own story.
Custom orders include consultation on color palette, environment, and installation considerations. Ideal for outdoor placement, gardens, beachfronts, or contemplative public spaces.
